February 26th – Figuring It Out

February 26th - a forest stream

“The more we grow in this program, the more we realize that we know very little.”

Life with Hope, first edition, page 52

When I first got clean I thought I was too smart for this program. I found the slogans to be childish and simplistic. Sure, they say “one day at a time,” but I know that really means I can never smoke again. I had it all “figured out” but in actuality I was too smart for my own good. I questioned all suggestions, thinking they didn’t apply to me. My questions were not helping me to get this program.

I gradually learned to trust the process and the program. I no longer think of my “brilliant” mind as an asset. The longer I am sober the less I want to think and the more I want to feel. I have learned that the best thing I can do for my sobriety is to listen to my heart, rather than my monkey mind. “Figuring it out” is just another way to say “obsessing.”

Final thought: Today, I will use my heart more than my head.
