“We had spent our entire lives and our using careers based on self-centeredness. This attitude does not change overnight. It is a lifelong process requiring the practice of perseverance.”
– Life with Hope, first edition, page 33
In active addiction, I was willing to do whatever it took to ensure my marijuana supply would never run out. In the past, at times, weed was hard to obtain but I always made sure I had some stashed away at all times. I would even lie to friends about it so I could smoke their stash instead.
Now, I try to apply that same level of determination to my recovery. I will give my sobriety as much time and energy as I gave my addiction. I will make myself go to a meeting, especially when I do not want to. If there is no in-person MA meeting, I will seek online or phone meetings. Twelve Step meetings are never hard to find. Other fellowships also have a lot to offer.
I smoked pot every day, so why shouldn’t I attend a meeting every day? Attending meetings and helping other addicts is akin to getting vaccinated against relapse. The immunity will last for up to 24 hours, and then I require another booster. In order to experience a daily reprieve, I must be willing to go to any length to help fellow addicts.
I will persevere even when it hurts. I was told that pain is the touchstone of spiritual growth because pain is just weakness leaving the body. One day at a time, I am willing to do whatever it takes to maintain my sobriety as guided by my Higher Power.
Final thought: Today, I will embrace the pain; as an expression of my gratitude for the gifts I do have, I will persevere.
