“By starting to trust our Higher Power, we cleared the way for growth and recovery.”
– Life with Hope, second edition, page 13
After living a life as a marijuana addict, it is often hard to change one’s life for the better. I have heard in meetings other addicts talk about all of the grandiose plans that were made while high, but never came to fruition. Lack of motivation and follow-through can often put life on pause. To make matters worse, the isolation and years of inactivity have made the very start of any worthwhile endeavor a painful and frightening experience.
Now, in recovery, I have been shown a path beyond a life of dreaming and procrastination. With the help of a power greater than myself, I can see that the only thing in my way is my own negative thoughts. If God is for me, who can be against me? This newfound motivation takes work and practice. The co-creative process of growth is not acquired by osmosis. I must learn that Higher Power works if I work with Higher Power, and therein lies the practice. Those dreams and aspirations I once had are attainable when I take the first step in their direction. Thinking about going back to school, writing a book, learning to play the piano, painting the next great American masterpiece is only a beginning. I also need to sign up for the class, call the piano teacher, grab pen and paper, and get those brushes and easel out of the closet.
I am built to be a demonstration of the awesome capabilities of my Higher Power. Fear, doubt, and worry are old emotions that no longer serve me. Recovery has taught me that together, my Higher Power and I can do anything. So I throw caution to the wind, rely on a power greater than myself, and walk hand-in-hand with Higher Power to accomplish my heartfelt goals.
Final thought: Today, I know I am capable of anything on which I set my sights. With Higher Power by my side, anything is possible.
