“…practically everyone can easily and naturally draw strength and support from the fellowship.”
– Life with Hope, first edition, page 7
When I started working the Steps, I learned how every single word of each Step has profound significance. My sponsor told me, “The first word of the First Step is ‘we’ for a reason. This is a ‘we’ program, not a ‘me’ program.” This same sponsor suggested I call at least three members from the program every single day. Often when I reach out to help another, I benefit just as much, if not more. As I persist in regularly calling other members, I learn the power of this connection when I am struggling.
Likewise, through regular meeting attendance, I learn that I am not in this alone. Pain is inevitable in the program, but suffering is not. When I become upset or angry with other members, I remember that I am in the rooms because of a spiritual malady that requires helping each other. Together we recover.
Final thought: Today, I will take time to connect with other members of the program, whether I am struggling or not.
