“This minimum of belief is enough to open the door and cross the threshold. Once we are on the other side, our belief and trust in a Higher Power broadens and deepens as we continue taking the Steps.”
– Life with Hope, third edition, page 9
In Step Two, it says “came to believe,” not “now I believe”, or, “I wouldn’t need any more Steps.” “Came” is a verb; a verb is an action, a movement; so it’s a movement towards something, in this case, towards belief, towards sanity, and spirituality. I get to know God, just like getting to know a new friend; it happens over time. I don’t instantly know everything about someone the first time I meet them. I build that relationship and take actions to get closer to them.
I make a decision in Step Three to clear the lines and the path to get to know my HP, to give my HP a chance to introduce itself to me. To make a decision to turn over my will and my life in Step Three—without quite knowing exactly what my Higher Power is—I took a leap of faith. “Even if we do not understand or feel connected to a Higher Power, it is possible to work Step Three.” (MA Workbook, first edition, page 9)
Final thought: To take Steps Two and Three, I do not have to understand and define my Higher Power. I only have to be open to the process of relinquishing self-will and taking the actions of the Steps to deepen my connection and understanding of my Higher Power.
