“We say, ‘we take’ these Steps, not ‘we took’ them, because we live these Steps continually.”
– Working the Program, MA pamphlet
The most treasured part of recovery to me, besides the fact that it has saved and transformed my life, is that the serenity I find is a daily reprieve. There is no day so awful that I cannot find a peaceful solution in the Steps; no action I can commit that is horrendous enough to take away the tools I have been given so freely. Every day, I can admit the powerlessness that leaves me stuck, understand that it is not up to me to fix it, and turn over my pain. I get to find the roots of my discomfort, confide in another about it, and then have them removed.
I clean my own house, connect to the Higher Power that helps me keep it clean, and spread the message of my continually-found peace; every single day. It is a gift beyond words to have the conscious daily opportunity to start over; to be able to surrender completely and continually to life on life’s terms, armed with solutions to any and all of life’s hardships in my Steps.
Final thought: Today, I collect my daily reprieve of serenity through continuously working the Steps.
