“We learned that the more we could let go of our selfishness and try to carry out what we perceived as God’s will, the more we started to experience serenity in our lives.”
– Life with Hope, first edition, page 33
Selfishness ruled my life in my addiction; I was too afraid and too desperate for control to give substantial thought to others and how my actions affected them. When I hit my bottom, I knew I had to change, but I didn’t know what to change or how. The fellowship of MA showed me that change was possible, and that I didn’t have to be afraid of letting go of my old ideas. Being of service showed me that I could make a positive difference in other people’s lives, and enjoy doing it.
Most importantly, practicing the Twelve Steps of Marijuana Anonymous daily gives me a relationship with a Higher Power that frees me from the fears that drive my selfish thoughts and actions. As long as I am open to my Higher Power’s will for me, and am willing to carry it out, I can experience a serenity I wouldn’t have been able to conceive of when I was using.
Final thought: Today, I will try to recognize where selfishness still runs my life, and ask my Higher Power to free me from it.
