“If I trust the inner guidance my Higher Power gives me then I will receive all I need and more.”
– Coming Home, Life with Hope, second edition, page 215
When I came into recovery, many years ago, fear got in the way of trusting my Higher Power. The Third Step seemed impossible to me, as I had no clue what my Higher Power was, and certainly had no trust it would be safe to turn my life over to it. At first, I had to use the group as my Higher Power and that worked well for me.
Early in my recovery, when I struggled with obsessive craving, I took the advice of a member who suggested I pray for the compulsion to use be removed. When I did, I could feel a transformation happen in the cells of my body. This really opened my eyes, that believing in a Higher Power could transform my life.
Later, after completing Steps Four through Nine, I was able to learn the limitations of my ego and its fear of letting go of control. Accepting that my ego will always be governed by fear, I needed to find another way. Developing a regular meditation practice helped to form a stronger bond with my Higher Power. I was able to feel the love, joy, and rock-solid strength of Higher Power’s presence.
I began trusting this connection more and more to make decisions and lessen the fear my ego generates. This helped me change careers to one I loved, deal with the challenges of the workplace, and retire comfortably. I was able to find and marry a wonderful person and we support each other’s spiritual growth. Best of all, I live a life based on trust that my Higher Power will care for me—no matter what.
Final thought: Today, I will trust the guidance of my Higher Power and will not let fear get in the way of living a life happy, joyous, and free.
