September 20th – Our Mission

September 20th - looking out from a boat on a peaceful lake in the mountains

“The story of the Lotus Eaters speaks particularly to us dopeheads. As addicts, we were stuck in a Lotus Land; we forgot our mission; we forgot the other adventures that awaited us; we forgot about going home.”

Life with Hope, third edition, page xxi

When I first read the story of the Lotus Eaters I was struggling with letting go of marijuana. I was stuck in a “Lotus Land.” I cried every time I used, wondering if this would ever stop. In the process of my addiction I did forget what my mission was. I forgot about all of life’s adventures that waited for me. I didn’t know how to get out. All I knew at the time was that I needed to keep coming to Marijuana Anonymous meetings to help me figure it out.

As I kept attending, I was discovering more about myself. I was discovering more about my Higher Power. I channeled this and soon discovered I too was like the scouts on my journey, again rowing like hell. I don’t know where I’m going next. I’m just trying to stay clean today; maybe that’s my mission for now.

Final thought: I don’t know where tomorrow will take me, but I do know that today I will be clean.
