“Faith provides us with the motivation to surrender to God’s will.”
– Life with Hope, second edition, page 57
As an active addict, I was a very negative person. I was enslaved by marijuana, and one day I was led to the rooms of recovery, where I have learned a new way to live, free from addiction. I learned how to pray in Marijuana Anonymous. At first, I would recite the prayers I heard in the meetings: the Third and Seventh Step Prayers and the Serenity Prayer. I heard that I should not ask for my will, but ask to be shown my Higher Power’s will. This wasn’t easy for me, because I could not always tell what was my will versus what was my Higher Power’s will. I’ve come to understand that my intuition is one of my Higher Power’s voices, and if I listen to it, it gets louder.
The Eleventh Step reminds me to pray for my Higher Power’s will for me and for the power to carry that out. I didn’t like the saying, “your will, not mine,” so I changed it to, “may my will, be your will.” In recovery, I want to keep my life as positive as I can.
Final thought: Higher Power, show me your will for me today, and grant me the power to carry it out. May my will, be your will.

Written by, Thia L. I’m an addict. I’m also a “chronic relapser.” Sometimes in meetings I joke that “I’m the poster child to keep coming back.” It’s not really a joke. I’ve been coming back to the rooms over and over for the past 12 and a 1/2 years. I can’t count the number of…
